"When in 1945, President Franklin Roosevelt introduced the idea of the United Nations, he described it as ?a universal organization in which all peace-loving Nations will finally have a chance to join." This insightful volume traces that vision as it emerged in the UN Charter describing the power bargains and the inspiring ideals that shaped the global constitution."--Kofi Annan, former Secretary General, United Nations
