Leila Ahmed


Leila Ahmed was the first professor of Women's Studies in Religion at Harvard University and is now the Victor S. Thomas Professor of Divinity at the university's Divinity School. She is the author of the seminal Women and Gender in Islam, in which she argues that the oppressive practices to which women in the Middle East are subjected are due to the prevalence of patriarchal interpretations of Islam rather than Islam itself. She is also the author of A Border Passage: From Cairo to America - A Woman's Journey and A Quiet Revolution.
